Brief History of Thai Massage

Thai massage’s history is a bit of a mystery.  Over time, many records about it have been destroyed.  It is highly probable that the tradition of Thai massage, for centuries, was primarily passed down orally.  It has been agreed by many historians that it began at least 2,500 years ago.  Shivago Komarpaj, also called Jivaka Buccha Komar, an Indian doctor, has been attributed to beginning the art.  Shivago Komarpaj is known as “Father Doctor” throughout Asia.  Throughout southern Asia he helped to spread traditional medicinal practices and was a colleague of the Buddha. Thai massage has developed into a popular holistic health tradition that includes aspects of yoga, Ayurveda, and Chinese medicine with foreign influences over the years.

How Thai Massage Differs from other Types

The practitioner uses their hands and sometimes other objects to relax and manipulate your muscles in most forms of massage.  Switching between face-down and face-up, you lie on a massage table.  You lie on a mat on the floor, however, with Thai massage.  Wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that is easy to move in is important. Usually, you typically remove all or most of your clothing with other forms of massage.  According to traditional Thai medicinal theory, Thai massage practitioners move your limbs around to stretch joints and gently massage key areas of the body.

2) Helps with Back Pain Relief.  Like the inner thigh and abdomen, Thai massage tends to focus on areas that can contribute to back pain.  However, it’s best to visit a doctor before getting any type of massage if you have constant back pain.
